“John told me that the piano was just sitting there, as furniture. He was going to put in a lonelyhearts ad for it: ‘Concert Steinway, fit 60-year-old, WLTM beautiful pianist, F, for fun nights in.’

 

“I loved calling the piano ‘him’. And that piano was almost… human. Gorgeous and mellow and responsive and as I went through my little repertoire from memory John made me believe I was a concert pianist after all. So suddenly I’m in a dream house, playing a dream piano for a dream man. And John said I was wonderful and begged me to play for him regularly, and guess what? He was an amateur ventriloquist and he made the piano beg me as well, like Sparky’s Magic Piano, and it made me laugh so much, and I was still laughing when we had a bath together, and still laughing when we went to bed together…”
