Patrick Cockburn’s remarkable and depressing report (5 June) makes it imperative for us to know whether our government supports the Bush administration’s plan to turn Iraq into a permanent American dependency – and whether British troops will be kept there to assist it.

As the report makes clear, any such decision would have a bearing on the US elections, and help John McCain at the expense of Barack Obama.
